Abstract:
A Quantum Photonic Chip on Tour
Photonic quantum technologies are rapidly transitioning from laboratory research to real-world applications with transformative potential, ranging from secure communication to photonic quantum computing. As these technologies move closer to market adoption, it becomes increasingly important to engage industry, policymakers, but also the broader public in understanding their impact and opportunities. In this pitch, I present QuanTour, a unique science communication initiative following the journey of a quantum photonic chip that generates single quanta of light as it travels across Europe and the world. The project connects cutting-edge research with our society through direct interaction and shared experiences. Along the way, I will highlight the underlying science of this globe-trotting quantum device and discuss how photonic quantum technologies are shaping the future of innovation and technology.
Short CV:
Tobias Heindel is Professor for Experimental Quantum Technology at the University of Münster, Germany, where he leads research on photonic quantum networks. He received his PhD from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg in 2014 and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research at Technische Universität Berlin, where he founded an independent junior research group in 2018. In 2025, he was appointed full professor at the Department of Quantum Technology in Münster. As initiator and organizer of the award-winning outreach project "QuanTour", he combines open science with innovative science communication.
