Scientific Profile
PhD Research
I obtained my PhD on 19 November 1999 at the University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands. My dissertation was titled: "Lumbar Dynamometry: A Useful Method for Assessment of Patients with Chronic Low Back Pain?"
Chair
With a background in biomedical sciences, my research focuses on personalized e-health applications for patients with chronic diseases and older adults. My expertise lies in investigating how wearable physiological data, combined with behavior change techniques, contextual information, and motivational strategies, can lead to personalized buddy systems that empower individuals to manage their health effectively, with or without professional support.
I view technology not as technology alone but always within the user context. This means I employ a socio-technical approach, with end-users and other stakeholders closely involved in the research.
As standard clinical trials are often unsuitable for complex e-health interventions, my work places strong emphasis on developing new evaluation methodologies that provide sufficient evidence of technology's added value within its intended context.
Inspired by the ‘valleys of death’, another research area of interest concerns successful implementation strategies—focusing on strategies supporting not only patients but also professionals, organizations, and collaborative networks.
