Matthias Buschfeld has been a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) since 2009. Having been elected into the City Council of Bottrop for the first time in 2014, he has been a council member ever since, while also becoming parliamentary group leader within the SPD in the council in 2023. He won the local elections in Bottrop, subsequently becoming the city’s new mayor in September 2025.

As early as 2014, Matthias Buschfeld worked as a freelancer in adult education and political consulting. From 2017 onwards he held the post of research assistant and later office manager of Thomas Göddertz, SPD member of the Landtag of North Rhine-Westfalia.
